AKRON, Ohio - The City of Akron plans to hire about 40 new police officers and 38 new firefighters.

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic announced Wednesday that the city will be administering police and fire examinations, most likely after the first of the year.

The city is encouraging people to go to the City of Akron website to sign up. You can also call 330-375-2720.  Akron residences and military veterans get up to 20 percent bonus points.

"Please sign up. We need you to help provide a higher level of safety that our citizens deserve and if we can't get good people in the system to take a test, obviously we get good people on the street," Plusquellic said.

The starting salary for a Police Officer is $48,422.40 and $47,486.40 for a Firefighter/Medic.
