AKRON, Ohio - The starting point guard for the Akron Zips men’s basketball team appeared in court for a video arraignment Friday morning following a drug arrest.
Alex Abreu, 21, pleaded not guilty to trafficking in and possession of marijuana. His bond was set at $5,000 by the judge, who ordered minimal supervision.
Abreu will appear in court again March 22.
Akron police said Abreu was arrested Thursday after accepting a package with more than five pounds of pot inside.
The arrest took place at the residence of 18-year-old Austin Durgala, who was also taken into custody. Durgala pleaded not guilty to trafficking in and possession of marijuana charges as well.
The junior point guard Abreu has been suspended indefinitely from the team pending the outcome of the police investigation, the university’s athletic department said.
Akron plays Kent State in its regular season finale Friday night and is the top seed in Cleveland for the MAC Tournament semifinals a week from now.
