AKRON, Ohio - An Akron high school football player was killed and another man was shot outside a store in the city Friday afternoon.
Lt. Rick Edwards with the Akron Police Department said the shooting happened at 3:33 p.m. in front of “Mr. Pantry” at the corner of Copley Road and Storer Avenue. This is just a few blocks east of Buchtel High School.
Edwards said the 17-year-old boy was taken to Akron General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A 55-year-old man was also shot and taken to AGH for surgery.
The Summit County Medical Examiner's Office identified the teen as Willie Brewer III on Saturday. Brewer got into an altercation with another person and was shot.
A football coach at Buchtel High told NewsChannel5 that Brewer was a junior at the school and played on the team. Fellow players held an impromptu vigil Friday night for their slain teammate.
No arrests have been made and police are still looking into the motive behind the shooting, Edwards said.
Officers are looking at surveillance video and interviewing witnesses to get more details about the incident.
