143-year-old Akron schoolhouse being restored

AKRON, Ohio - Preservationists in northeast Ohio have finished work on a one-room schoolhouse in West Akron and are now turning their attention to the inside of the 143-year-old building.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that the preservationists want to remove knotty-pine paneling and cabinets along the back of the school to reveal the original chalkboard.
Other plans include refinishing white oak floors now hidden under orange-striped carpet, restoring huge windows, and adding a coat, room, bathroom, kitchenette and a memorial library.
The Preservation Alliance of Greater Akron began restoring the schoolhouse in 2009 is trying to get it added to the National Register of Historic Places.
That would make the property eligible for state and federal grants to help with restoration.
