AKRON, Ohio - A Massillon man suspected of the mercy killing of his wife was arraigned and charged with murder Wednesday morning in an Akron courtroom.
The 66-year-old Wise is charged with shooting his wife, Barbara, of 45 years, at her bedside Saturday. She died the next morning.
Wise already appeared before an Akron municipal court judge via video from the Summit County Jail Tuesday morning on an aggravated attempted murder charge. His bond was set at $1 million.
No plea was entered. Wise must return to court Aug. 22.
The original attempted murder charge against him was upgraded to aggravated murder following Barbara Wise's autopsy.
According to police, Wise was armed with a gun when he went to his wife's room and pulled the trigger. There was a doctor in the room at the time of the incident, but the doctor wasn't injured.
The Wises had been married for 45 years.
Barbara had been admitted to AGMC last week with a non-disclosed, life-threatening condition.
