Hybrid cars are in demand, short supply

MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio - Soaring gas prices are sending buyers to hybrid cars with record speed. Honda, Toytota and Huyndai are reporting brisk sales -- in fact, some analysts are calling it panic buying.

Gas prices coupled with aftermath of the Japanese earthquake could make getting these hybrids even more difficult since none is made here in the United States.

"All of our hybrids which includes the Civic, Insight, and the CR-Z are produced in Japan. They have stopped production on those vehicles temporarily and we feel it's going to have a real affect on our supply over the coming months," said Tom Kurlough of Sunnyside Honda in Middleburg Heights.

The demand for fuel efficient cars always increases when the prices at the pump are high. Right now, Kurlough only has eleven Hybrid cars left on his lot. Normally, he would have four times that many.

Many Honda and Toyota vehicles are made right here in the U.S. It's the hybrids like the Prius that are made exclusively in Japan.

If you're in the market to purchase a hybrid vehicle, sooner is better than later. The uncertainty of vehicle production in Japan will be lingering for the next month or so.
