STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Two teen girls were arrested after the 16-year-old victim in the Steubenville rape case received death threats on social media.

On Sunday, a visiting judge found two Steubenville High School football players guilty of raping the drunken girl during a series of parties last summer. Trent Mays, 17, and Ma’Lik Richmond, 16, were sentenced to at least a year in juvenile prison and will have to register as sex offenders.

The Attorney General’s office said a 16-year-old girl was charged with aggravated menacing for threatening the rape victim’s life on Twitter. Another girl, age 15, was charged with menacing for threatening harm on Facebook.

"Let me be clear. Threatening a teenage rape victim will not be tolerated.  If anyone makes a threat verbally or via the internet, we will take it seriously, we will find you, and we will arrest you," said Attorney General DeWine in a statement Monday night.

Both girls were taken to the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center, DeWine’s office said.

The investigation into the threats is being handled by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office with help from the Steubenville Police Department and the Jefferson County Prosecutor’s Office.

During Sunday’s verdict and sentencing, Mays and Richmond defendants cried in court. Soon after, DeWine said a grand jury will decided if more people should be charged in the rape of the teenage girl.

Evidence during the trial showed the crimes were documented on cellphones and rehashed in text messages, indicating many people knew about the incident, but did nothing to report or stop it.
