CLEVELAND - NewsChannel5 was in your community Saturday to donate blood.
WEWS anchor Danita Harris gave blood at Mount Gillion Baptist Church in Cleveland.
The American Red Cross was there to collect blood donations to help those affected with sickle cell anemia.
The incurable disease primarily affects the African-American and Hispanic communities where there is a shortage of blood supply.
Anne Chapman with Rainbows Baby and Children’s Hospital said "it's better for them to receive blood from an African-American donor than from a Caucasian donor because of the different blood types and antigens."
One of the treatment options is a blood transfusion.
