CLEVELAND - When you walk down the cereal aisle, you have more choices than ever, but with all the advertising pulling you in this direction or that direction, what are truly the best options for you and your family? Amy Jamieson-Petonic is a dietitian with the Cleveland Clinic, and she says to look past all that advertising and go straight to the ingredients.
"Are the ingredients in it ones you can pronounce? Are there maybe more ingredients than you're comfortable with? Look for something that's as close to being in the natural state as possible," Jamieson-Petonic said.
The ingredient list is on the side of the box right under all those nutrition facts. One cereal most overlooked is wheat germ, but it is also the very best for you. The ingredient list consists of three things: Wheat germ, Vitamin E and folic acid or Vitamin B. And Jamieson-Petonic says the ingredient lists are in order from most prevalent to least. She also says there is one very bad "S" word you need to avoid.
"If sugar is one of the first five ingredients in the product, as a parent I would recommend looking for something else," she said.
Another way to look at sugar is in grams. If there are more than four grams of sugar per serving in any cereal, keep on looking.
"I'm going to ask you to go back to basics again. Look for cereal that's as natural as possible. Look for something that you can pronounce the ingredients. Look for a basic high fiber cereal and add some fresh fruit to it, " Jamieson-Petonic said.
