STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - The president of the Strongsville Education Association delivered a counter-proposal to the board of education Friday afternoon.
The teachers’ union and the Strongsville City Schools Board of Education failed to reach a deal earlier this month that would have avoided a strike. Instead, Friday marks the end of week 3.
SEA President Tracy Linscott carried an envelope with “SEA Counter Proposal March 22” written on it in black marker among a sea of about 200 teachers. Linscott said they are simply there to deliver a new proposal, but she was not allowed in the building.
“They’re not allowing me in. Shame on them,” Linscott said to the chanting union members. Then moments later, a security guard allowed Linscott to deliver the proposal to the district superintendent.
"John took it. Good for John. He didn't say he'd read it, but he did take it personally," Linscott said of superintendent John Krupinski when she walked back outside.
"I have accepted it from Mrs. Linscott, SEA president. I have not reviewed it in total so I can't comment on the totality of it. But we certainly will review it closely," Krupinski told NewsChannel5's Deb Lee.
Numerous police and security officers were also at the scene, which NewsChannel5’s Paul Kiska described the situation as tense.
The SEA said in a news release that the new offer contains more than $300,000 in proposed savings, including concessions on insurance benefits.
The SEA bargaining team met with Strongsville Mayor Thomas Perciak at his invitation Friday morning. The school district refused to attend the meeting because it was not an official negotiation with the federal mediator.
Also on Friday, Strongsville High School students held a brief walkout. The student organizer of the protest said it was not in favor of the teachers or the school board, but a sign of unity.
