COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio House has passed a bill aimed at improving Cleveland public schools.

The House voted 77-16 Tuesday to approve the measure. The Ohio Senate voted 27-4 Tuesday on an identical measure, and is expected to adopt the House version Wednesday before it is sent to the governor.

Under the bill, applications by community school sponsors would be reviewed by the state, a panel appointed by the Cleveland mayor and a charter school association. The bill also calls for implementing national standards to assure charter school quality.

Local tax money would be shared only with community schools sponsored by the Cleveland district or partner schools.

Ohio House Democratic Leader Armond Budish of Beachwood says the measure creates what he calls "badly needed accountability for charter schools."
