CLEVELAND - The Cleveland Teachers Union has rejected a fact-finder's contract proposal for concessions meant to help close a $19 million budget deficit.
The no vote means the union and district must resume contract talks.
The Plain Dealer reported Wednesday the proposal by the federal fact-finder would have cut teacher pay for next school year by $13 million.
The schools CEO says pay cuts this year and health-benefit cuts over two years would have averaged out to less than 2 percent.
Union President David Quolke says the plan unfairly asked teachers to bear the brunt of the budget problems.
Mayoral spokeswoman Andrea Taylor said Wednesday the contract dispute is unrelated to the recent agreement on state legislation sought by the mayor to improve Cleveland schools.
