CLEVELAND - Cleveland school officials have decided to close a building over structural concerns.
On Thursday, the Cleveland Metropolitan School District said it will close the Almira School at the Nathaniel Hawthorne building.
The district will now begin moving students and staff to the Brooklawn facility, which is one mile away on Worthington Avenue.
According to the district, a custodian spotted two deteriorating support beams during a routine inspection. Structural engineers will perform a survey to determine how the building will be used in the future.
The Almira School, which teaches pre-kindergarten to eighth-grade students, will be closed Jan. 9 to 11. CMSD expects classes to resume on Jan. 12.
The move means the 300 students will have an extra three days of Christmas break, which was supposed to end on Monday. A letter was sent to parents, notifying them of the changes.
