CLEVELAND - Expert witnesses for convicted serial killer Anthony Sowell have billed taxpayers more than $100,000 in expenses.
So far, just four expert witnesses have cost taxpayers $103,000.
Dr. George Woods, a psychiatrist, charged $350 an hour. His diagnosis cost a total of $47,647.
Dr. Dale Watson, another psychologist, charged $300 an hour and received $35,000 for his services, including billing taxpayers $3,000 for time he spent traveling by jet from California to Cleveland and back.
Finally, Lori James Townes, a social worker who testified about factors that may have influenced Sowell's behavior received a total of $15,830.
Sowell's attorneys have been paid $138,000 so far, but that figure is expected to increase.
Taxpayers have paid $81 a day to house Sowell in jail, bringing that figure to at least $55,000 up to this point.
The grand total, including attorney fees, expert witnesses and Sowell's jail stay to date is approximately $296,000.
