CLEVELAND - Public defenders for convicted Cleveland serial killer Anthony Sowell have filed a nearly 400-page petition challenging his 2011 death penalty conviction.
Legal rulings that led to Sowell's conviction and sentence are the basis for the post-conviction relief appeal.
The state will get a chance to respond to the claims.
One of the most common claims in such an appeal is that the defense attorney didn't adequately represent the client during the original trial.
Sowell has a newly appointed attorney, Jeff Gamso, who said his client will file an appeal with the Ohio Supreme Court.
If a judge denies the petition, it means Sowell's conviction and sentence are upheld. If it's granted, the judge will order a new trial or modify the sentence.
Such filings are common for death penalty cases and are often turned down.
Jurors convicted Sowell of murdering 11 women in Cuyahoga County, burying their remains in and around his now-demolished Imperial Avenue home.
