ANDOVER, Ohio - After viewing the damage first hand, meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Cleveland have determined that the storm damage that occurred in Andover, Ohio, Sunday morning was caused by a tornado.
The tornado was given an EF-1 rating on the Enhanced Fujita Damage Scale. This EF scale gives any tornado a score of 0 to 5 based on the damage left behind. An EF-0 tornado has the weakest wind speeds, while an EF-5 can have wind speeds approaching 300 miles per hour. In this case, officials estimate wind speeds in this tornado between 90 and 100 miles per hour.
The tornado first touched down near the intersection of Mann Road and Creek Road at around 6 a.m. Sunday. The twister then traveled about 4.5 miles east-northeast across the south side of the city of Andover. It then lifted over Pymatuning Reservoir.
Significant tree damage occurred on the southwest side of town. A barn also lost its roof. The tornado also caused serious damage to dozens of trees and a warehouse just southeast of Andover square. Several boats were tossed into Pymatuning Reservoir as the twister lifted off the ground.
