Since the massive earthquake hit Haiti on Jan. 12, food, supplies and monetary donations have been pouring in from all corners of the globe.
Two fourth graders from Solon are doing their part to help those in need. When Megan Lebowitz and Rachel Rothschild of Lewis Elementary School watched the aftermath of the earthquake, they realized they had to do something.
"There were so many people that lost their homes and that had no place to go. They had no food, water, anything and I felt really bad about that. So we decided to start this," Lebowitz said.
What they started was a fund-raising drive to help the people of Haiti. Fliers and collection jars were placed in every classroom. Some student sacrificed tooth fairy and piggy bank money to help.
"Everyday, we went into the kindergartners and even though they don't have a lot of money, we could tell they were putting in pennies and it really meant a lot," Rothschild said.
Thus far, $900 has been collected.
The two girls have given up lunch and recess time for the cause. They have stayed late and even came in on an off day to help.
