CLEVELAND - The hit TLC show "Extreme Couponing" is in its third season, and it's still dividing the coupon world.
Local coupon expert Joe Daugirdas is better known as "Joe the Coupon Guy," and came close to appearing on the program.
"When they called me to say, 'hey, we want you to be on the show.' I said, 'hey, you didn't show couponers in the best light on there," Daugirdas told NewsChannel5.
"Extreme Couponers" focuses on shoppers who clear shelves with coupons and take drastic measures to save money, such as dumpster diving and stockpiling basements full of products.
"I don't want to look like one of those hoarders they typically show," Daugirdas explained.
He donates his extra products to charities, such as churches and food banks, and wanted that to be part of the show.
Daugirdas also spends some free time educating coupon users with classes and a local radio show. He said what he wanted featured on the program, and what "Extreme Couponers" producers wanted, were two different things. So, he decided not to be on an episode.
However, the show has helped other shoppers learn to be extreme couponers.
Jinnifer is one who now can double her budget because of the fact. She watched a few shows, listened to the lingo, researched couponing online, and went from throwing coupons away to clipping them. Now, Jinnifer shares her newfound skill with others in local coupon classes.
If you want to start using coupons more, you do not have to spend hours searching online for deals. There are many websites that do the hard work for you and will match up sales with coupons.
