Cleveland Hopkins International Airport reopens, but closed security checkpoint creates long lines

CLEVELAND - Cleveland Hopkins International Airport reopened Tuesday with United resuming flights at 3 p.m., but expect delays if you have a scheduled flight.

There were a lot of surprised travelers when they walked through the doors and saw hundreds of people waiting to go through security.

The backlog was caused by the closure of security checkpoint B. The airport said it closed it as a precaution.

There are several skylights just above the security equipment, and there was concern the skylights would lift up from the high wind gusts and rain would drip down onto the equipment.

There was a tarp over one piece of screening equipment. The airport expects to re-open security checkpoint B Tuesday at 8 PM.

The closure caused long lines at the two open checkpoints.

"It would be nice if they were all open,” Julia Reddish said.

"I'm a little worried about the security lines,” Cathy King said.

King was headed on her honeymoon and worried about missing her flight. She and her husband already canceled a planned outing for Wednesday worried their flight wouldn’t even leave. They were happy their flight was on time and they could start enjoying married life.

Flights to the East Coast are still canceled.

Travelers who had their flights canceled Monday said they got an automated call and they only sat on hold 10 to 15 minutes to re-book. Not bad considering how many flights have been canceled.

It’s still a good idea to check with the airline to make sure your flight is on time as the airlines return to normal business in the next few days.
