GREEN, Ohio - The airport wars continue between Cleveland Hopkins and Akron-Canton. CAK reports it set an all-time passenger record in 2012, welcoming more than 1.8 million fliers.

The 5 On Your Side Consumer unit has analyzed airfares several times, and CAK traditionally has lower fares. According to the latest government numbers, CAK fares average more than $100 less than fares at Hopkins. CAK airfares averaged $311, Pittsburgh $362, and Cleveland fares averaged $433.

Cleveland is trying to remain a United Airlines hub, and will tell customers that prices are typically higher because of the service consumers get at a hub airport: more direct flights.

Cleveland Hopkins is asking the business community to spend up to $300 extra per ticket to fly out of the hub, hoping to show United Airlines the city is committed to keeping the hub in town.

Akron airport officials said 2012 is the third consecutive record-breaking year. Passengers were up 10.4 percent year over year.

"By every standard, 2012 was incredible for CAK," said Rick McQueen, president and CEO. "A double digit increase in traffic and welcoming Southwest make the year particularly memorable. Plus, we are optimistic about our future. We offer the lowest average air fare in the state and a relaxing airport experience."
