CHICAGO - The airlines canceled more flights this week as a storm once again battered the East Coast. This time it was snow. The cancelation of flights has a huge financial impact on the airlines as they are already struggling to increase their profitability.
United Airlines, which has a hub in Cleveland, told investors superstorm Sandy reduced the airline's revenue by $90 million and the company's profit by $35 million. Nearly 5,300 flights were canceled as a result of the storm.
The airline is still trying to get back on track after its merger with Continental.
Delta also lost revenue and profits from Sandy. The airline canceled over 3,500 flights which caused a 2 percent reduction year over year. Revenues decreased by $45 million and profit by $20 million.
Delta's New York operations were still recovering from the storm into the first few days of November, but expected to get back on track soon.
