General Motors' CEO Dan Akerson met with some owners of the Chevrolet Volt and reassured them that the company is committed to the vehicle. Akerson told the owners and also reporters that the recently announced production halt is nothing more than inventory control. The Volt plant will close for five weeks and mean the temporary lay-off of 1300 workers.

More than 1/4 of the nearly 7700 Volts sold last year went to buyers in California. The Volt ran into trouble last year after two test cars started on fire weeks after government crash tests.

Akerson says that the Volt has been unfairly linked to President Obama and the bailouts, pointing out that the Volt was on the drawing board long before Barack Obama was elected president.

Akerson says a similar production stop for the Chevrolet Cruze, last year,  went almost unnoticed. He calls the attention on the Volt mostly political.
