Kia is another car maker that is reaching for new levels of gasoline economy.  It now has 4 models that exceed the 40 MPG barrier.

Kia's new hybrid combines a six-speed transmission with new lithium ion batteries that are 30 percent more compact to save on weight and size.

Chevrolet showed its in five-door Sonic, a compact car that has a starting sticker price around $14,000 and is designed to keep you away from the pumps.

"Our 1.8 liter engine gets 26 MPG city and 35 MPG highway," said Chevrolet engineer John Buttermore. "We also have an optional 1.4 liter turbo, witch turns up the performance and the fuel economy, 29 MPG city and 40 MPG highway."

Chevrolet is also building sporty economy in its concept cars. The Tru 140S was designed after a survey a 9,000 Millennials determined fuel economy and interior connectivity were key features for the upcoming generation. The Tru 140S is designed to go beyond the 40 MPG benchmark.
