DETROIT - Despite a tough economy, super cars, luxury cars and concept cars are alive and well at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

One of the highest priced is the 2012 Maybach 57S, with a shocking $415,000 sticker price. Luxury comes with plenty of speed from a 620 horsepower V12 engine.

Speed and luxury also found on the new Bentley Continental GTC convertible. As you might guess, not many of these will be made.

"$212,000 U.S. dollars, we're hoping to sell about 1,000 cars this year," said Bentley Engineering Director Ken Scott.

Luxury and speed are also a Mercedes trade mark in this SLS AMG Roadster, with a 563 horsepower, 6.3 liter V8. The AMG Roadster comes standard with a seven-speed automatic transmission, and a fully loaded price of $226,000.

Or how about the Audi R8 GT, with a top speed of 199 miles an hour, 0 to 60 in just 3.6 seconds, and a sticker price of $210,000.

Chevrolet has a new "Ray" on the block. It's the 2012 Miray hybrid. Miray is Korean for "future," and this carbon fiber car cooks with just a 1.5 liter turbo power train.

And BMW is looking towards the all electric car market with its I8 and I3 concept cars, available within the next two years.

"The I3 will be the first mass produced carbon fiber car, which makes it very light," said BMW Product Manager Paul Ferraiolo. "This light weight helps compensate for the weight of the batteries."

Proof the future of innovative automobile making is very much alive in Detroit and around the world.
