CLEVELAND - Whether you're looking to have your carpets cleaned before your holiday guests arrive, or after they leave, it's easy to get overwhelmed by all the choices offered by carpet cleaning companies. Typical cleaning methods are steam cleaning, bonnet cleaning, and dry carbonating cleaning. But which is the best one to use?
"The best bet is to follow your carpet manufacturer's recommendation because you don't want to risk voiding your warranty," said Angie Hicks, of consumer review group, Angie's List.
The most common technique is steam cleaning and can be a do-it-yourself project. However, not all methods are that easy. Bonnet cleaning is a low-moisture cleaning method which uses a circular pad that rotates to help lift the dirt from the bottom. This is typically thought of as a temporary fix between more extensive cleanings. Dry carbonating extraction creates foaming bubbles, which lifts dirt to the surface to then be vacuumed up. Even though it might cost a little bit more, these methods may be best to leave to a professional.
Regularly cleaning your carpet will extend the life of the carpet, especially areas with heavy traffic, or if you have pets. Angie's List also recommends making sure your carpet is tight. Loose carpet can rub together like sandpaper and wear faster. It is also a good idea to check prices and make sure your professional carpet cleaner is certified. Also, obtain a written contract before any work begins.
