CLEVELAND - Last year, tens of thousands of Americans ended up in the emergency room because of home improvement accidents.

“We've heard many stories about people falling off a ladder while pruning trees or cleaning gutters. 164,000 Americans end up in the emergency room every year because of do-it-yourself accidents," Angie Hicks from Angie’s List said.

While a project may look simple at first, homeowners never know what they may uncover along the way.  And what started out as a money saving idea may end up requiring a contractor.

“Homeowners should avoid projects related to plumbing and electrical as far as do-it-yourself and hire in a pro for those. If you've got smaller jobs such as hanging pictures or putting together bookcases, those are better projects," Hicks said.

And it's not just the remodeling experts who warns of dangers, doctors are quick to point out what may seem to be simple tasks, can end up with a trip to the hospital.

"Don't work if you're tired. The number of people that come in and say ‘I was just going to cut one more piece of wood, and I just wanted to get it done.’ They get distracted or they are fatigued," Dr. James Creighton said.

Hicks warns just because you're not afraid to tackle a project doesn't mean you should. Be realistic about your skills. Make sure you have the time to complete the projects. And if you must do the job yourself make sure you have the right tools.

If you decide to leave the job to the experts, make sure to check their references, credit history and reports from the Better Business Bureau.
