WASHINGTON, DC - A Baptist congregation in Washington is becoming the first black church in the District of Columbia to go solar.
The Florida Avenue Baptist Church has held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a 10-kilowatt, rooftop solar system that will cut its electricity costs and reduce its carbon footprint. The system is powered by 44 solar panels on the church's flat roof. Washington-based Volt Energy, a minority-owned firm, is supplying photovoltaic panels for the project.
Pastor Earl Trent Jr. says the church has established a "green ministry" to educate church members and the community at large about renewable energy, energy efficiency, electric vehicles and sustainable agriculture.
Trent says the biblical command for energy conservation is straight out of Genesis. He says his church installed a solar system to improve efficiency and the system is already showing benefits.
