WASHINGTON - Congressman John Culberson says legislation is needed to prevent religious rights violations like those reported last year at Houston National Cemetery.
At a House hearing, the Texas Republican said the cemetery's former director censored prayers and padlocked the chapel. A VFW official and a veteran's widow confirmed those complaints.
VA officials settled a federal lawsuit last year by agreeing that such abuses won't happen in the future.
But attorney Kelly Shackelford, president of Liberty Institute, told the House Committee on Veterans Affairs that a law could more effectively instruct officials to respect the religious rights of veterans' families.
