MANASSAS, Va. - A leading advocate for Christian broadcasters is stepping down.

Frank Wright, who has been president of National Religious Broadcasters for the last decade, says his resignation will take effect Oct. 4.

Wright says after much prayer, he and his wife sense God leading them in a new direction, although they aren't sure yet what that will be.

Wright became NRB president in 2003 after controversy over the organization's mission ended the brief tenure of his predecessor. Wayne Pederson was forced out after telling the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that he hoped NRB and its members would become more known for evangelism than support for conservative political and social positions.

Frank Wright says he's leaving on good terms and is confident that God has prepared the right man or woman to take his place.

In a statement, NRB Board Chairman Richard Bott said the board appreciates Wright's "dedicated service and stellar performance."
