NEW YORK - Former New York City Mayor Ed Koch was Jewish, but he's been buried at an Episcopal cemetery.
Koch, who died Friday at the age of 88, bought the grave plot at Trinity Church several years ago because at the time it was the only available burial site in Manhattan, where he was determined to remain after he died.
Koch's gravestone quotes the last words of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic militants. It says: "My father is Jewish, my mother is Jewish, I am Jewish."
In Monday's funeral at Temple Emanu-El, a Reform Jewish synagogue, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said his predecessor was like Moses, leading the city through a difficult time and offering people hope.
