SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah has announced its first-ever course examining the Book of Mormon as a work of literature.
Instructor David Bokovoy says the class scheduled this fall will take a secular, academic look at the text as an "impressive work of literature," unlike other Mormon studies courses that focus on the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bokovoy's class will examine the book as 19th century American religious literature with deep literary ties to the Bible.
He says the semester-long course won't explore the historical origins, translation or authorship of the book.
The Book of Mormon was first published in 1830 in language similar to the King James Version of the Bible.
