CLEVELAND - Shine up your bedazzled leotard cause we’re going to break down the week four elimination round on “Dancing with the Stars.”
And this elimination could have quite a ripple effect.
The show skips the encore dance (probably wise – most of the dances were dangerously acrobatic) and gets straight to the results.
The show gives us a pre-taped segment, including footage of reality star Bristol Palin and Mark making up after their tiff. (It also shows Louis leading the audience through a group disco - in fact, Sarah Palin’s right behind him, getting into it.)
First up, Olympian Shawn Johnson and Derek are safe, as are actress Kelly Monaco and Val, plus singer Sabrina Bryan and Louis.
But Bristol and Mark are in jeopardy. As always.
After the show, Sabrina already started practicing for next week, tweeting, “Heading home from our rehearsal! This week is going to be so amazing! Can't explain how grateful I am to still be in this competition! # DWTS .”
Shawn tweeted, “Thank you all for voting! On to another week and already headed to rehearsals! Team Dance here we go! # DWTS .”
The show then gives us some perplexing Carson Kressley segment, for some reason. He pretty much hunts people down around the set like a shrieking bird of prey.
Then we get a Macy’s Star of Dance performance from Christina Grimmie singing “Titanium.”
Back to the results. More recap footage of what happened Monday night, including Karina’s slip during her dance with Olympian Apolo Anton Ohno.
How did I miss that the first time?! She took a big, awkward fall. That the whole world saw. No wonder she cried. (Well, that and to probably garner sympathy votes.)
Anyway, actor Gilles Marini and Peta are safe, as are NFL retiree Emmitt Smith and Cheryl, but Apolo and Karina are in jeopardy.
Gilles tweeted, “Completely dead tired but still can't sleep. Thinking of the group dance and our Rumba. Merci for all your support . Won't let you down . G.”
The next results come pretty quick. TV host Melissa Rycroft and Tony are safe, but actress Kirstie Alley and Maks are in jeopardy.
Melissa tweeted, “THANK YOU again!!! Another week!! It's midnight and we just got done with group rehearsal. This chick is going to BED!!! Thank you again!!!”
It’s performance time again. Donny Osmond and Susan Boyle prove to be an unusual pairing for “This is the Moment.” Poor Susan seems to be a little shy, but her voice still sounds good. Donny holds her hand for most of their song.
Now the show reveals its big twist: the stars are about to pick on live TV their teams for group freestyle dances next week. It’s kind of setup like picking dodge ball teams in high school gym class.
First, the two team captains are announced, based on highest scores. Our captains are Gilles and Shawn.
Next, each captain picks an envelope, which contains their song. Gilles opens his: it’s the annoying “Gangnam Style.”
Shawn opens her envelope: (I spoke too soon) it’s the more annoying “Call Me Maybe.”
Shawn and Derek look sick at the thought of choreographing to this over-played radio constant. Right there with ya, guys.
Third, they pick teams. A coin toss decides who goes first, and Gilles calls it.
Gilles picks Kelly, and Shawn picks Sabrina. Gilles picks Kirstie, and Shawn picks Melissa. Gilles picks Emmitt, and Shawn picks Apolo. But the teams are even, and Bristol is left.
Mark tweeted, “That's sucks lol. Totally feel like that awkward kid in the playground no one wants to play ball with... Lol.”
Host Tom Bergeron explains that one of the couples will still be eliminated. If Kirstie gets eliminated, Bristol goes to team Gilles. If Apolo gets eliminated, Bristol goes to team Shawn. If Bristol gets eliminated, the teams don’t change.
Time for the final elimination. Right off, we find out that Apolo and Karina are safe.
It comes down to Kirstie and Maks, and Bristol and Mark.
Apolo tweeted, “You fans are the best. Thank you!!!! We are already in rehearsals for our team dance!”
After weeks of being the dark horse contestant (and a whole other season as the underdog), it’s Bristol and Mark who get the least viewer votes. She got the second to lowest score Monday night and the judges were complimentary.
This is interesting. Bristol’s presence always threw off the bell curve. She typically got the lowest scores, but her fan base always brought her back. That meant really any of the stars could get cut, not the lowest-scoring star.
With Bristol gone, it’s almost a sure bet that, whoever the judges give the lowest scores to, will also get the least viewer votes and go home.
Odd moment for Bristol and Mark’s farewell dance: their look says “Oh well” and none of the other couples seem surprised.
The competition returns Monday night at 8 when the couples will perform two dances: one individual team and a team dance.
