Studio bosses behind new superhero reboot THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN have confirmed plans to extend the franchise into a trilogy.
Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield took over the franchise from Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst last year (11) in a bid to give the comic book classic a new look, and after smashing box office records by raking in $35 million during its opening day on Tuesday (03Jul12), it appears fans were happy with the result.
Now executives have announced the new film will be the first in a three-part series.
A post on the movie's official Facebook.com page reads, "It's finally here! The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave (favourite) hero's journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents."
A release date for the sequel has been tentatively set for 2 May, 2014.
Before the announcement, industry leaders expected the project, directed by Marc Webb, to be a one-off, unlike that of Sam Raimi's original trilogy, led by Maguire, which debuted one decade ago (02).
