MARK WAHLBERG encountered legal problems when he chose to film scenes in his new movie BROKEN CITY on a tight budget after his character hurled beer bottles at a rental car driven by his assistant.

To cut back on the new movie's budget, Wahlberg, who also produced the film, invited friends and acquaintances to be in it - but his thrifty ways caused big problems in New York when one scene got out of hand.

He explains, "We hired a bunch of my friends to be in scenes but we wouldn't tell them what we were doing. There's one particular scene where my character falls off the wagon when he realizes that his girlfriend, who is an actress in the movie... is having this really hardcore sex scene... and so I lose it in the theater.

"I basically choke the guy who is in the scene with my girlfriend at the premiere party and then I hired my friends to stand at different parts of the street and I would just attack them. I was ripping crates off of store fronts, throwing garbage barrels into the street; we went into a store and I just walked out with two beers and I had a car drive by and I threw the beer off the windshield.

"The cops freaked out, they pulled our permits and threatened to arrest me... I had to basically call the Mayor's office and apologize to get our permits back so we could finish shooting in New York."
