Hip-hop mogul JAY-Z is facing a $7 million lawsuit over allegations of unpaid royalties relating to his record label's iconic logo.
Clothing designer Dwayne Walker claims he is owed money for creating the Roc-A-Fella Records symbol, which features the letter 'R' over a vinyl disc, and he filed papers in Manhattan Federal Court in New York on Thursday (12Jul12), citing copyright infringement.
The documents state, "The logo has become universally recognized as an iconic symbol of Jay-Z, one of the most successful recording artists in the history of popular music."
Jay-Z is named as a defendant, alongside his former business partners Damon Dash and Kareem 'Biggs' Burke, who helped the 99 Problems hitmaker found Roc-A-Fella Records in 1995. The label has since become a subsidiary of Universal Music Group.
