A guide to hosting or attending 2012 clam bakes in northeast Ohio

CLEVELAND - To some, Labor Day weekend is a sign that the end of summer is near. While some may be holding on to the remaining days of the season, others are welcoming the start of cooler temperatures.

The fall season brings many things to the table including cozy sweaters, pumpkin-flavored food and drinks, football and -- in northeast Ohio -- clam bakes.

Whether you decide to host one at home or leave the cooking to the professionals, we’ve gathered a list of area clam bakes around northeast Ohio.

Leave it up to professionals

Where: Winking Lizard (Bedford Heights, Peninsula, Macedonia, Canton, Fairlawn, Lakewood, Brunswick, Avon, Crosswoods, Bethel Road and Mentor)
When: 3 p.m.; Sept. 14
Details: One dozen clams, chowder, corn on the cob, baked or sweet potato and garlic bread. Add steak, ribs, barbecue chicken or lobster.

When: Start time: 6:30 p.m.; Seated at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 22
Details: All-you-can-eat mussels and New England clam chowder; one dozen clams, smashed yams, sherry cole slaw, roasted red skin potatoes, sweet corn, corn bread and maple whipped butter and pumpkin roll; With half a chicken: $55; With strip steak: $60; With lobster: $65

Where: Hodge's Cleveland
When: 2-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20 ; Seated at 3 p.m.
Details: Beer Week clam bake includes five Bells Brewing Company three ounce samples. All-you-can-eat mussels and New England clam chowder; one dozen clams, smashed yams, sherry cole slaw, roasted red skin potatoes, sweet corn, corn bread and maple whipped butter and pumpkin roll; With pulled pork: $55; With half a chicken: $60; With strip steak: $65

Where: Grumpy's Cafe
When: Noon to 10 p.m. every Friday until October 26
Details: Mesquite chicken, one dozen clams, mashed sweet potatoes, southwest corn and homemade bread: $14.99; With soup or salad: $17.99; Substitute 12-ounce strip steak: Add $3.99

Where: Pickle Bills
When: Daily until the end of October
Details: All bakes are served with a cup of broth, one dozen middle neck clams, cup of clam chowder, corn on the cob, sweet potato, melon and famous fried dough and cinnamon honey butter.
Cost: Oven-roasted half chicken: $23.95; One pound whole Maine lobster: $36.95; 3/4-pound slow roasted prime rib au jus: $36.95; Crab leg bake: $32.95

Where: Blue Canyon Kitchen and Tavern
When: 4-7 p.m.; Begins Sept. 9 and every Sunday in September
Details: All-you-can-eat black garlic clam chowder, field green salad, corn spoon bread, corn on the cob, whipped potatoes, BC roasted chicken and mini s’mores. Price also includes one dozen steamed middle neck clams with melted butter and clam broth.
*Reservations are required to guarantee clams.
Cost: Adults: $22.95 per person; Childen (8-12): $13.95; (3-7): $7.95 (2 and younger): Free *Prices for children do not include clams. Additional clam orders: $9 per dozen. Upgrade dinner to 6 ounce tenderloin: $10

Where: Welshfield Inn
When: 6 p.m. Oct. 6, 13, 20, 27 and Nov. 3
Details: All-you-can-eat Prince Edward Island mussels, all-you-can-eat clam chowder, one dozen middleneck clams, mashed sweet potatoes, creamy cole slaw, sweet corn, pumpkin role with warm pecan sauce and complimentary non-alcoholic beverage. Choice of half chicken, New York strip steak or whole maine lobster.

Where: Twin Oaks Winery
When: 6:30-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19; Seated at 7:30 p.m.
Details: All-you-can-eat mussels and New England clam chowder; one dozen clams, smashed yams, sherry cole slaw, roasted red skin potatoes, sweet corn, corn bread and maple whipped butter and pumpkin roll. With pulled pork: $50; With half a chicken: $54; With strip steak: $58.

Hosting your own DIY event

Where: Euclid Fish Company
Details: Snow crab bake with one full pound of crab and clams for $29.99 or combination of snow crab bake with half pound of crab, clams and chicken for $26.99. Bakes include rolls, cole slaw and butter, plates, bowls and silverware.
*EFC provides steamers or pots that won’t leak. Burners are available too. 

Where: Lobster Brothers
Details: LB offers traditional DIY basic to fully-prepared options that range from $16.50 to $19.99 per person. All options include a seasoned half chicken, one dozen Rhode Island littleneck clams, sweet corn, sweet potato, cole slaw, dinner roll, butter for clams and steamer, paper products and utensils. A la carte items

can be added.

Where: Farm House Foods Inc.
Details: Basic clam bake includes one dozen middle neck clams, half a fresh chicken, ear of sweet corn, sweet potato, coleslaw, roll and butter, butter for clams and disposable paper goods (plates, clam bowls, butter cups, cups for broth or chowder, utensils and napkins) for $16.95 per person. Add a half-pound of snow crab for $21.95; Half pound of king crab for $27.95 or a lobster tail for $30.95.
