CLEVELAND, OHIO - The weather was much like a spring day in Mexico on East 4th Street on Friday, as lunch-goers on patios enjoyed the intermittent sun and a brief break from the recent humidity.
Rigo Rodriguez and his colleague Josh Helm walked down the street looking for some food. Both of Mexican heritage from Sandia, California, they were hoping for a good place to celebrate Cinco De Mayo and relax on Saturday.
All are here as guests and trainers for the Horseshoe Casino's new staff.
"In San Diego, there would be a party on every corner," said Rodriguez. “We're hoping for a real Mexican Cinco de Mayo maybe here or West 6th, or somewhere on the west side. We're not sure yet.”
Meanwhile, across from the West Side Market, a brisk Friday lunch crowd soaked up the warm breeze and talked about the Kentucky Derby. Manager Leigh McDermott is excited to be part of the annual West Side Ecumentical Ministry benefit auction that takes part in their tasting room at 2516 Market Ave.
"It includes silent auctions items and takes place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are still available and ladies make sure you wear those big hats," said McDermott.
On West 116th Street, Chelsea's Vintage Clothes and Costume shop had most of her hats and bonnets on display for rent. The shop has both party types of hats available for either party this weekend.
To check the selection of Derby day or Cinco De Mayo hats and clothing, contact owners Nancy Wilson or Cathy Pickens at 216-226-9147 Tuesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
