CLEVELAND -- Scammers are using the "cash for clunkers" program as a vehicle to get personal information from consumers, the Better Business Bureau said. The BBB in Cleveland said they found two Web sites that duplicated www.cars.gov Web pages. They said links were added that sent users to sites to get pricing for vehicles and trade-in value estimates. Subsequent links then asked for personal information, such as Social Security numbers, home address and place of employment. The BBB said it's the responsibility of the dealership to complete all paperwork, and consumers do not need to register or receive a voucher to participate. There is no need to provide personal information online to qualify.Consumers can visit the official Web site at www.cars.gov for all program stipulations and a list of dealerships participating in the program.
