If you've ever received an unwanted telemarketing call during dinnertime, you may have had the urge to say some nasty things to the caller. But think twice before you do: It now appears that you can get in trouble with the law, reported NewsChannel5's John Matarese. The arrest of one Ohio man for threatening a telemarketer now raises the question of what is OK to say and what is not.Police arrested Charles Pepenfus on a charge of threatening a car warranty telemarketer, one of the people who calls phone numbers with pitches about reactivating warranty coverage.A few months ago, Matarese reported on Tim Henderson's frustration with warranty calls since he drives a 40-year-old Dodge Dart.Luckily, Henderson didn't threaten the caller. So what is it OK to say?The Federal Trade Commission recommends saying, "Put me on your no call list," or, "I am reporting you to the do not call violations line," or, "I am reporting you to the state attorney general."You can even say, "Get lost, creep."But it's not OK to threaten to harm a telemarketer, or make death threats against anyone, as Pepenfus learned the hard way.The Better Business Bureau said while it does not approve of Pepenfus's threats, it understands his frustration.
