If you like to have those fresh, juicy tomatoes for your summer salads, but don't have a lot of garden space, the "As Seen on TV" product called the Topsy Turvey may be your answer. It claims to be the world's easiest way to grow tomatoes. Debbie Dean of Dean's Greenhouse agreed to test it out. The kit came with a big bag, a circular sponge and a lid. "This is called a root ball and we're going to have to squish this a little bit and that's OK. You're not hurting your plant: You're squishing it a little bit." The circular sponge with a slit then clamps around the base of the plant inside the bag. "It's going to keep the soil from coming out of the hole in the upside down planter," said Dean. The next step is soil, and you'll need to ask someone for help because of the style of this product. There's some question as to how much dirt you need to put in, but Dean said to mostly fill the bag. The bag holds more dirt than expected and once it's watered, it'll weigh up to 30 pounds. So find a strong place to hang it and then be patient. After four weeks, Dean was surprised."I think the Topsy Turvy plant did exceptionally well," she said. Dean said don't be deterred by the fact that there's only two tomatoes. "Tomato plants start off a little slow. Once it gets going, there will be 10 a week," she said. So, for $9.99 the Topsy Turvy may be worth a try if you want that homegrown tomato taste, but don't have the space for an in-ground plant.
