CLEVELAND -- Inside a store like Cottage of Flowers in Lakewood, the plants are perky and the flowers are in bloom. But what happens when you get them home? The "As Seen on TV" product called Aqua Globes seems like a great option for people who forget to water their plants or who are away from home for stretches at a time. The product is supposed to keep the plant or flowers moist for 14 days.Mary Grand from Cottage of Flowers volunteered to try the product to see if it really does that. The package had two glass globes that were heavier than expected. The directions say to use a small stick to make a hole in soil. Then fill the globes with water and stick them into the soil. It's a tad confusing as to what constitutes a big plant, which is important, because a large plant may need two globes. For the purposes of the NewsChannel5 test, the station chose to put one globe in each plant. It was fairly simple to install the globe into the mum plant, but the peace lily was a little trickier. You do need to make sure the globe is deep enough in order for it to work. This can be difficult if the plants have an intricate root system. Of course, since the product is glass, you also need to be careful. After 14 days, NewsChannel5 went back to check out the plants at Cottage of Flowers. No additional watering was done during the two weeks.Grand noticed that the peace lily didn't use all the water in its Aqua Globe. Since the plant didn't absorb all the water, it started to wilt. The mum did use all the water, and actually ran out of water on day 12. That caused the blooms to start to turn brown. But Grand said that's normal when you leave a mum inside. In fact, she had another mum that had been watered by hand and had to be thrown away.So would Grand buy the product? "Yes, I think I would buy it," Grand said. "The plants seemed to fare pretty well, but you might need to check it sooner than day 14."Consumers can get the globes in stores starting at $9.95 or order them online. Right now, four globes are being sold online for $14.95 plus $7.95 shipping and handling. If you have a product you would like NewsChannel5 to put to the test, e-mail doesitreallydothat@newsnet5.com.
