Patch Perfect: Does It Really Do That?

What would think about a product that promises to grow grass anywhere? Good Morning Cleveland Anchor Kimberly Gill put Patch Perfect to the test.

A bag of Patch Perfect retails for about $20 plus shipping and handling. Its creators say you can spread it over any spot in your yard, and then forget about it. But does it really do that?

Gill asked homeowner Mary Jane Matcham in Middleburg Heights to help her try it out.

Matcham is selling her house. She's done a lot of work to get it looking good for potential home buyers, but there are still a few bald spots in her yard. She wanted to try Patch Perfect under the awnings of the garage and along the edge of the driveway.

To test the product, Matcham turned the soil about an inch using a rake, and then spread Patch Perfect over the shaded area. Then she saturated the area with water.

Gill checked a week later and it looks like Patch Perfect did the job, for the most part. There was a nice area of lush green grass in the shady spots, but the grass still looked patchy in other spots.

Overall, Matcham said Patch Perfect does really do what it says it does. However, Gill found a discrepancy. The bag says it can cover 100 square feet of lawn, but there wasn't enough seed inside to even come close.

Gill also talked to a couple of lawn care experts who said you'd be better off buying a bag of rye grass seeds from your local nursery. It's much cheaper and works just as well.
