CLEVELAND -- The inside of your car can feel like an oven after it’s been parked for a few hours in the summer heat, but there's a product that claims it can keep your vehicle cool no matter how long it's left in the sun. It’s called the Auto Cool and Good Morning Cleveland anchor Kimberly Gill decided to put it to the test. The Auto Cool is a solar-powered fan. Its manufacturer claims it pulls the hot air out of your parked car. It sells for $14.99. The commercial says it will cool your car by as much as 30 degrees, no matter how hot it is outside. But does it really do that?We decided to use one of our NewsChannel5 station vehicles to test the Auto Cool.It was definitely a hot and humid day. Kimberly followed the directions, putting on the weather stripping to seal the Auto Cool onto the window. Kimberly found the weather stripping was difficult to measure.Once that was finished, Kimberly tried mount the Auto Cool, but immediately ran into a problem: The fan didn’t run right away. She gave it a few minutes and checked the temperature inside the car. It was more than 100 degrees. When Kimberly closed the door, the Auto Cool snapped in half. Our photographer duct-taped the unit back together then waited again for the car to cool off.But the little fan didn’t start turning until Kimberly pointed it directly at the sun.So according to Kimberly’s test, the Auto Cool didn’t really do what it promised. If there’s a product you'd like Kimberly to put to the "Does It Really Do That" test, send her an e-mail at gill@newsnet5.com.
