Officials: Nanny Uses Stuffed Animal To Try To Smother Child

Woman Due In Court Today

UPDATED: 12:10 pm EST November 8, 2004

A 62-year-old nanny is accused of trying to smother a child left in her care.

ABC reported Nanny Bella Zalamea was reportedly caught on tape slapping, kicking and then attempting to smother a 10-month-old child.

The child was not harmed and will not suffer any long-term effects, ABC reported.

Zalamea faces child abuse charges.

"Of course, I trusted her," said Kristin Hayes, the child's mother. "I wouldn't have left my children with her if I didn't trust her. I'm not an insane mother."

Hayes was suspicious, however, so she insisted that her husband install a hidden camera. In just 24 hours, their suspicions were confirmed, ABC reported.

"When the baby started to cry she went over to her and three times slapped the baby on the head," said Lt. Kevin Smith of the Nassau County Police Department.

The tape also reportedly shows the nanny slapping the baby on the buttocks and then kicking the child.

She then put the baby on her lap and allegedly attempted to smother her with a stuffed animal.
