Women Allegedly Kidnap, Rob Senior Citizen

73-Year-Old Forced To Withdraw Money At Bank

POSTED: 12:51 p.m. EDT June 10, 2003

It was supposed to be a nice day out for a local senior citizen, but NewsChannel5 Crime Stopper Adam Shapiro reported it turned into one of the worst days of her life.

It's about as clean a picture as you can get of a woman who police say did something downright dirty.

"She said, 'Well, I have a gun. Keep walking,'" kidnap victim Bertha Gray said.

Gray, 73, is still too afraid to show her face, but she wants people to see the face of the woman who police say kidnapped Gray and stole money from her.

Gray was waiting for the bus outside The Arcade last Tuesday when the woman allegedly grabbed her.

According to police reports, the woman claimed to have a gun and forced Gray to get into a car driven by a third woman.

"They say, 'You a senior. You have money,'" Gray said. "I say, 'I don't have money.' They say, 'You have money -- this is first of the month' and they say 'We going somewhere and getting some money.'"

The women allegedly took Gray to Key Bank and forced her to withdraw $200 from her account.

After Gray came out of the bank, the women put her in the car. Then they drove her to East Ninth Street, where they let her out. Gray said she was in a daze and wasn't sure what had happened. She got out the bus stop and got home and that's when she called the police.

"I never had nothing like that done to me. It was a shock," she said.

Now, it's Gray's turn to pull a surprise.

Bank cameras took several pictures of the suspect, and police are hoping someone will recognize her.

You can earn up to $2,000 if your anonymous tip leads to the arrest of the woman police believe kidnapped and robbed Gray.
