Innerbelt Bridge To Close Tonight

POSTED: 2:50 pm EDT October 3, 2008
UPDATED: 7:20 pm EDT October 9, 2008

The Innerbelt Bridge will close Thursday night at midnight to conduct a stress test, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

The bridge was scheduled to close Wednesday night but was postponed due to rainy weather.

Traffic will be restricted on the Interstate 90 bridge from midnight until 2 a.m. Friday.

After 50 years of wear and tear on the bridge, experts have found there are five spots on the structure that will eventually need to be repaired.

ODOT will partner with experts from the University of Cincinnati and Case Western Reserve University to install strain gauges at several key points on the bridge. These gauges will measure how much the steel beams compress or stretch, allowing engineers to calculate the actual stress and strain being put on the bridge.

Additional details about the test will be released soon.

Meanwhile, the Ontario Street entrance ramp to I-90 westbound will remain closed. Crews also closed the East 9th Street, East 14th Street, Ontario Street and I-77 northbound ramps to I-90 westbound.

The suggested alternate route from the east:

Interstate 77 southbound to I-490 westbound
State Route 2 (Cleveland Memorial Shoreway) westbound
Interstate 271 southbound to Interstate 480 west to state Route 176 Jennings Freeway north

Suggested alternate routes from the west:
Interstate 490 eastbound to Interstate 77 northbound
State Route 2 (Cleveland Memorial Shoreway) eastbound
State Route 176 (Jennings Freeway) south to I-480 eastbound to I-271 north
W. 25th Street to the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge
W. 25th Street to the Detroit-Superior Bridge
