ELYRIA, Ohio -- Elyria City Schools plans to keep tabs on its school buses using GPS units.Parents will be able to know if busses are running late, when they leave and how long it will be before their child is dropped off.The new system is designed to keep students safe and give parents peace of mind. The city's school buses travel almost 3,000 miles daily and transport 2,300 students on 58 busses. The system, called Zonar, organizes a digital check list and every driver has to go through it, checking everything from tires and lug nuts to safety bars and mirrors.Inside, busses can be followed by supervisors. Location, speed route and idle time is logged and archived for every bus.The city contracts out a private bus company and it provided the upgrades, so there is no direct charge to taxpayers. With GPS, bus routes should be as short as possible, and with the city spending $50,000 a month on gas during the school year, the cuts are expected to save money.
