Residents Return Home After Massive Warehouse Fire

POSTED: 5:33 am EDT July 3, 2008
UPDATED: 11:00 pm EDT July 3, 2008

Demolition efforts are under way at the site of a massive warehouse fire Thursday morning.

The warehouse, which is the former home of General Industries, was completely destroyed in the blaze that broke out at about 2 a.m. Thursday.

An evacuation order for a five-block area near the site of a massive warehouse fire has been lifted, after the blaze has gotten under control, officials say.

Elyria residents were being allowed back into their homes late Thursday morning but have been told to keep their windows and doors closed.

Fire officials were concerned about the potential for harmful fumes being released from the fire because it used to be a plastics factory.

About 75 firefighters from 21 fire departments battled the blaze at the warehouse, which is located at Olive and Taylor streets.

No injuries were reported.

The cause and origin of the fire remain undetermined and under investigation at this time. Because of the size of the building and the extent of the fire damage, the investigation could take several days to complete.
