Thousands Of Unclaimed Funds For Ohio Residents

Do You Have Money Waiting For you?

We could all use some cold hard cash. But you don't need to win the lottery to cash in. Ohio is holding $1.2 billion in unclaimed funds and your name might be on the list.

After reviewing some of the top accounts, NewsChannel5's Joy Benedict went looking for some of the lucky recipients. She found one person who is owed $2,784. Another person Benedict talked with said, "I used to check it all the time and I haven't checked it in the past several years."

Then Benedict checked some of the folks in the newsroom. Our own Paul Kiska was surprised to be on the list. Ted Henry was also on the list, but he's only owed $8.

And the truth is, a lot of folks on the unclaimed funds list aren't owed thousands of dollars and many people are deceased. It would likely take an attorney for relatives to claim those funds. Under state law, Ohio keeps 5 percent of the claim.

So how do you know if you're owed funds? First log onto the Ohio's Department of Commerce Web site Unclaimed Funds and click treasure hunt.

You put in your first and last name and cross your fingers. The Web site won't tell you the exact amount, just the company the money came from and steps to claim your cash.
