Dressing For Success Means More Than Ever

Good First Impression Could Land You An Interview

Job fairs are drawing hundreds, sometimes thousands of unemployed folks these days. They are all hoping to land that one-on-one interview. So what is it that makes a lasting first impression and gives you an edge?

There are definitely some do's and dont's of interview fashion. Think classic said Jerry Kovatch, the General manager of Macy's at Great Northern. "You always wanna look your best when you go in for that first interview."

He said every man should invest in one suit that is versatile, and that can work in all seasons like navy, gray or black. Kovatch suggests buying a sport coat if you don't own a suit. It's also worth investing $50 to update your shirt and tie.

Kovatch said avoid anything too busy but it's ok to take risks with color, "So they say, 'The gentleman who had the yellow shirt on."

For the ladies, stay away from busy prints. A black blazer is a classic and there is so much you can do with it, including adding a ruffled or large collared blouse. A necklace or scarf is also a nice added touch.

Linen is always a no-no because you look wrinkled in 10 minutes and remember to always wear close-toed shoes. If you are applying for a job that doesn't require a suit, you still want to wear a sport coat to the interview.

Do not chew gum because it's distracting. Make sure your nails are nicely manicured. If you wear cologne or perfume, just make sure you don't go overboard.

Finally, be prepared. Make sure you have your portfolio with you and you have several copies of your resume.
